About Chengde Mountain Resort Scenic Area

Located in Hebei Province, northeast of Beijing, the Chengde Mountain Resort Scenic Area served as the summer residence for Qing dynasty emperors between 1703 and 1820. Spanning approximately 5.6 square kilometers of palatial gardens and surrounded by an extensive parkland area totaling over 5,600 hectares, this vast retreat offers a rare integration of classical Chinese landscaping, imperial architecture, and natural mountain terrain. The resort includes serene lakes, rolling hills, dense forests, and historic temples that reflect a fusion of Han Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan, and Manchu cultural influences. Visitors can explore the ornate palaces, pavilions, and halls constructed with exquisite craftsmanship, as well as the nearby Eight Outer Temples complex, an important religious and cultural site. Beyond cultural sightseeing, the area provides peaceful hiking paths through forested slopes and lakeside promenades, making it a popular destination for walking, photography, and nature appreciation. The geography features a mild mountain climate, with extensive mixed forests supporting diverse plant species and some wildlife such as birds and small mammals. The resort's historical significance as a political and cultural center, coupled with its scenic beauty, makes it a premier site for both outdoor enthusiasts and history lovers alike.
